Bookmarks

In this digital age, when people reference a bookmark, I think it’s common to think of your browser’s bookmark list of links or the bookmark button on a Kindle or other e-reader. When I think of a bookmark, I think of “dog-eared” page in a physical book or a pretty paper bookmark that you would put in a book to mark the page that you last read. I still use paper bookmarks, mostly in my cookbooks, as a quick way to get to my favorite recipe without having to use the index. I made the bookmarks pictured below for a friend and I love the way they turned out. I started with Ranger Inkssentials Manila Craft Tags and trimmed the width to a narrower size.

For the seahorse design, I used Tim Holtz’s Layering Stencil “Bubble” with distress ink for the background. The seahorse from the Sand & Sea Sizzix Bigz Die was cut out with watercolor paper and distress inks mixed with water gave the seahorse the look I was hoping for. The sentiment is part of the stamp set “Huge Possibilities” by Unity Stamp Co. A copper-colored wire ribbon topped off the bookmark for a little sparkle.

The feather design was put together using some cardstock that had a watercolor look. I glued the cardstock on to the craft tag before I narrowed down the tag width. I used Taylored Expressions Fine Feathers die cut with leftover watercolor paper. “Mermaid Lagoon” was the name of the blue ink that I used on the feather before it was embossed with copper embossing powder. I love the way metallic embossing powder looks and copper is one of my favorite colors! The sentiment is also from Unity – “Radiate the World” stamp set. I added some scrap ribbon that I was happy to use out of my stash jar.

For bookworms who still read from a physical book, they might use a random slip of paper or a business card as a bookmark, but I think these are much more interesting and prettier!
